Meta Tags That Actually Matter
Not all meta tags are created equal. Google uses some, ignores others, and actively penalizes misuse of a few. Here's what actually matters in 2026:
Title Tag
The single most important on-page SEO element. Keep it under 60 characters, put your primary keyword near the front, and make it compelling enough to click. Every page should have a unique title.
Meta Description
Google doesn't use meta descriptions as a ranking factor, but they directly affect your click-through rate. Write them like ad copy — 150-160 characters that convince users to click your result instead of a competitor's.
Canonical URL
If the same content is accessible at multiple URLs, the canonical tag tells Google which version to index. This prevents duplicate content issues and consolidates ranking signals.
Open Graph & Twitter Cards
These don't directly affect Google rankings, but they control how your pages appear when shared on social media. A compelling image and title can dramatically increase shares and traffic.
- og:title — The title shown in social shares
- og:description — The description shown below the title
- og:image — The preview image (use 1200x630px for best results)
- twitter:card — Set to "summary_large_image" for maximum visibility
Structured Data (JSON-LD)
Structured data isn't a meta tag, but it's critical for modern SEO. It helps Google understand your content and can earn rich results (stars, FAQs, breadcrumbs) in search results. Use JSON-LD format — Google recommends it over microdata.
